Similarities Between the RN and BSN

Similarities between the RN and BSN degree programs are as wide-ranging as their student populations. Both RNs and BSNs have the opportunity to gain a Master’s in Nursing or other advanced degree, depending upon where they chose to study. In general, however, both degrees require students to obtain at least 60 credits of prerequisites beforehand in order to be eligible for graduation. RNs who want to pursue graduate studies in public health and education have the option to take general courses toward their RN degree. Those individuals who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing (BSN) will be considered under an “all students” category and will have access to the prerequisites for their specific course of study.

Similarities between the RN and BSN degree programs also extend to the core curriculum. The RN programs have a strong focus on statistics, nursing fundamentals, health care management, leadership, human resources, and other related areas. A few of the core curriculum areas found in RN programs are psychology, interpersonal communication, health law, medical ethics, medical terminology, pharmacy basics, nutritional studies, anatomy, physiology, and infectious diseases. BSN students will generally have a greater focus on the clinical aspect of nursing.

Similarities between the RN and BSN degree programs are as diverse as their student populations. There are many different types of student populations interested in these degree programs. Some students go on to pursue graduate studies in areas unrelated to nursing, while others pursue a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and go on to become practicing nurses. Many RNs start out as registered nurses and achieve an advanced degree prior to pursuing a BSN or higher. Many students begin their careers as registered nurses and then go on to pursue BSNs or advanced degrees. Other students choose to go on from there.

The physical sciences and mathematics are both important parts of learning to be a nurse. This is true for students pursuing either a BSN or RN degree. These courses include biology, chemistry, anatomy, health, and physics. There are also many different concentrations within these courses to choose from. For example, many RNs go on to become physical therapists, anesthesiologists, nurses with a cardiac rehabilitation emphasis, and others.

Similarities between the RN and BSN degree programs also exist in the clinical skills that students learn to become effective health care providers. Both RNs and BSN students learn the clinical skills necessary to provide quality care to their patients. In many ways, the two degree programs teach the same lessons. Both programs introduce students to theory-based concepts, such as how to evaluate a patient’s condition, and how to prepare the next level of care if that evaluation reveals a serious illness or condition.

Similarities between the RN and BSN degree programs also exist in the application skills that students learn. Most graduates of the programs learn to apply various concepts learned throughout the course of their studies, including ethics, practice management, interpersonal communication, and accounting skills. Many graduates of the programs find a job in nursing, as they prove their proficiency in these areas.
